First hike in Asheville in the books!
I decided to try out the Hard Times Loop trail, although it didn’t go as expected. I decided to turn it into and in-and-out hike rather than a loop after reaching a crossroads and not being sure which way to go. Normally, I would just pick a way and see it out, but I had a time limit before having to be back in town, so I’ll have to give that a try another time.
The site I used to navigate the location of the trail and turns to make is below. I noticed a few directions that were different from what I experienced, the first being that the parking lot I found was on the left, not the right. After that I was able to follow the directions fairly easily, until I, of course, reached that crossroads that I didn’t see mentioned.
Overall, the trail was an easy hike. The majority of it was on a old service road and was still wide enough to fit a vehicle (I even ran into a UTV and truck coming up when I was on my way back down). There’s a slight incline once you cross over the canal which ended up being a great workout, especially for my calves. At the beginning there are also many different trails that split off, so I’m hoping to make it back soon to finish this loop and start exploring those different trails as well.
